Crime in Choir - Trumpery Metier (2006)

http://www.mediafire.com/?imz2uiwztyw

Normally the term "modern prog" scares the ever-loving Genesis out of me, and my sphincter seals tighter than an airlock on a NASA shuttle. So, imagine my surprise when I got this on a recommendation when it was released, only to spin it for the first time and say "hey, that ain't half bad!" This isn't what one would normally consider when they think of "modern prog." Rather, I see it as a genuine stab at the vintage prog/canterbury from the 70s, combined with a double-shot of jam-heavy funk and a side order of Ozric Tentacles. The instrumentation gives off an epic feel throughout the entire affair, but once you get used to the sound, it's easy to realize that we're dealing with a quintet of guys who just want to get down and play some music; nothing more than that. I guess I should point out the most notable flaw in that this is a "what you see is what you get" type of experience. Sure, there might be quite a few breath-taking moments, but a scratch-n-sniff won't reveal many future revelations while listening through. However, if you're content with throwing on some good, well-orchestrated jams that lack any possible instance of modern prog snobbery, I encourage you to strap on your favorite bib and dig in. - The DOK

Ruff Sqwad - Guns & Roses Vol. 2 (2006)

23 of the slickest bangers to emerge from the grime scene, and a testament to UK hip hop's admittedly long-winded movement away from its American parents. And absolutely no cross-over potential -- trust me, they tried and failed -- which offers some explanation for the meager nature of the music press' UK hip hop canon. - Liam

Country Teasers - The Empire Strikes Back (2006)

http://www.mediafire.com/?agz4tydioi3
I was gonna pick Disclaimers The Airbag's Lipstick Kiss, but in the end I opted for this slab by misanthropic, Fall/Frogs esque UK act The Country Teasers from spring 2006. Best misleading soundbite to sell this to the Babble curious is THE WALL (well it opens with a partial cover of "In the Flesh) meets THE FALL, with unliberal use of CHALLENGING META-BIGOTRY as has been so popular this decade meets catchy keyboards in an exploration of UK race relations in the 70s . BEST HEARD SEVERAL TIMES AS A WHOLE but for an accessible entry point, try "Hitlers & Churchills". - A Smith

Delays - Faded Seaside Glamour (2004)

http://donignacio.com/8mm/delays/

If the angels were to form an indie-pop band, they might sound something like this. This music seems to be stuck in a warm, golden, and otherworldly state and the lead singer has one of the dreamiest falsetto vocals I've ever heard. The first time I heard this album was a few years ago, and I was awestruck. Since then, my appreciation and admiration for it has grown on me even more. This is one of the few '00s albums that I've listened to more than 30 times. Not only have they come up with an amazing sound, but all 12 of these tracks are gems. I've come to realize that it's a shame that so few people have heard this, so it was a rather easy decision for me to nominate it. - Don Ignacio
